The curriculum Canadian Identity will enable and encourage students to examine issues, respond critically and creatively, and make informed decisions as individuals and citizens of Canada in an increasingly interdependent world. For many grade 9 students, this may be the last time that Canada is studies formally in school. Our focus is to better understand what it means to be Canadian through the richness of our culture, our nation’s history, and how we see ourselves in a global context.
The Canadian Identity course is divided into five units:
Unit1:
Expressions of Canadian Identity
This is an activity based unit that encourages students to explore what it means to be Canadian.
Unit2:
Geographic Influences
We will explore how physical, human and economic geography have influenced how Canadians live.
Unit3:
Decades of Change
We will examine how people, events, and issues from the past century to present day have influenced our history and development.
Unit4:
Citizenship
This unit has a political science focus. We will explore the role of government, power and may participate in small citizenship class projects.
Unit5:
An Evolving Identity
We will analyze the economic, political and social challenges and consider the opportunities these challenges present to Canadians. Current events will play an important role in this unit.
